Keep your files safe

I had been writing two reports over the last three days. Which were now ready for me to print off for the Friday morning meeting. I had made sure I was saving the Word documents as I want along. Didn't want to lose anything.

It can be a long process creating these month end reports. I had spent the previous week getting all the stats together in Excel sheet and writing notes as to what to put into each report.

I had also spent weeks rewriting contact for the companies website. Spending a day or two with our designers getting together the new branding guidelines document and new set of images for our key product pages.

We had been away over the weekend too. I am big into photography and had been downloading all the images from my digital camera onto my PC as I was off the reports.

"Just need to copy them over to where I keep all my photos". "I will do that after I grab a snack". I had noticed that my PC has been making a load of grinding noises for the past week or two. "Best get all this backed up just incase".

"Where do I put all my stuff again? Is it on this external drive or do I normally put my backups on the cloud?"

I was a little worried as I hadn't backed up any files for a good few months. I had so many pictures that I didn't want to lose. Not to mention all the work we had done over the past three months. I have lost could of the Word documents and Excel spreadsheet that have important information in that I can't afford to lose because of an old PC.

I headed over to the Windows App Store and search "backup my PC". "Wow there are quite a few apps on here, they all look pretty complicated". You notice one call Sensible Backup. "Sounds like what I am looking for".

I quickly installed the app and it launched straight away. It looked really straight forward to use. I started by selected which folders I wanted to backup. I have 3 or 4 main folders I keep everything in relating to my photos, word documents and personal files. Took no time at all to select the correct folders.

I have 3 or 4 main folders I keep everything in relating to my photos, word documents and personal files. Took no time at all to select the correct folders.

Next I selected the time I wanted the app to backup my files. I generally leave my PC on, so 2AM should do it.

After routing through my shelves I find my external hard and plug it into my PC using the USB cable. I go back to the app and select the F drive which is the letter for my external drive. I don't have anything on there so the files can just be dropped into the root folder.

That's it, ready to go. I noticed there is a little button that will run the backup straight away. I decided to run the backup now, better safe that sorry. A notification appears from Sensible Backup informing me that the backup has started.

I head off and make my snack. I come back with a sandwich and I have another notification. Sensible Backup again, my backup has been successful. I check in the app and notice there is a history section showing the backup and that it has been successful with a timestamp and a little green tick. Pretty cool. I click on the backup report and it gives me a reports of what has been backed up. A quick scan of the files listed. Looking good.

For peace of mind I check the files on the external hard drive using Windows Explorer. What do you know, a zip file has appeared with the name being the timestamp of the backup run. I open the zip file. Ha, it has saved everything in the structure I have on my PC. Nice.

No longer did I have to remember to backup my files. It was taken care of and I am informed as to when and what each backup has done. What a find this app was.
